As lockdown continues, the strange hobbies people have picked up during quarantine are starting to be revealed. While some have stuck to puzzles, cleaning, reading and simple pastimes, apparently others have found more extreme ways to escape. According to a new study, many Americans have turned to LSD during these times, mainly because they believe "the world's on fire."
The study, performed by doctoral candidate Andrew Yockey form the University of Cincinnati, looked to see if there was a link between LSD use among adults and the coronavirus pandemic. "LSD is used primarily to escape. And given that the world's on fire, people might be using it as a therapeutic mechanism. Now that COVID's hit, I'd guess that use has probably tripled," said Yockey.
Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the research team found that LSD use increased 56.4% among adults in America from 2015 to 2018. While today's numbers don't compare to the mid-20th century halcyon hippie peak, the study believes the stress of today's world has led to this increase. While many are looking for ways to forget the world around them, it appears some have turned to LSD as the world burns.
