Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that doing intense four second workouts periodically throughout the day can cancel out the effects of sitting all day. Over the course of three days, the study looked at eight young, healthy men and women. On the first day, researchers tracked the individuals as they sat all day. The next they had the participants eat a high-fat breakfast consisting of melted ice cream to study the metabolic response.
On the final day, participants were asked to sit all day, but instead each hour they peddled a stationary bike for four seconds, rested for 45 and peddled again, repeating that routine five times, over the course of eight hours. Researchers saw a change in their metabolic response, showing short bursts of exercise is enough to affect the body. Lazy people everywhere no longer have to worry about long workouts.
