Most massage techniques incorporate some form of chopping. However, that’s usually done with hands and not sharp objects. Still, despite sounding more like a torture technique, the latest trend in massage therapy has people getting chopped with meat cleavers.

Daoliao, the massage technique that translates to “knife massage,” or “knife therapy,” has become a popular form of therapy recently. The Chinese form of medicine is over 2,000 years old and is said to have physical and emotional healing powers. The technique has seen a resurgence in Taiwan.

The technique involves chopping and rubbing motions done with meat cleavers. Surprisingly, many find the massage to be relaxing, with some even falling asleep from the knife massage. With the trend gaining popularity, it’s only a matter of time before it’s done in the United States.
