There are a number of attributes people give when asked what their ideal dating match is. Most of the time things like; funny, attractive, nice and interesting are things people say they want in a partner. However, new research shows dating types are just a myth, as people actually don’t have as much insight into what they want versus who they end up with.

The study, done by researchers at the University of California, Davis suggests that people’s dating preference doesn’t reflect any personal insight. More than 700 participants were asked to name their op three ideals in a romantic partner, but in the end many chose partners based on positive attributes, not necessarily the ones they looked for. “we want partners who have positive qualities, but the qualities you specifically list do not actually have special predictive power for you,” said lead author Jehan Spark.

While many have specific attributes they would like to see in a person that apparently doesn’t have as much of an effect on whom someone ends up with as they may believe. The results could affect how people go about dating online, as normally people look for these attributes that don’t actually hold as much weight.
