There are plenty of people who would like to experience space travel in their lifetime. While that may not be a possibility for another few years, a new start up is looking to take space enthusiasts as close to the final frontier as possible. Space Perspective is hoping to send people 19 miles up, to the edge of space, in a hot air balloon.

The new start up plans to send people on a six hour trip to the edge of space in a hydrogen-filled balloon. The company said last week that they have established a launch center at the former Space Shuttle landing facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “We’re committed to fundamentally changing the way people have access to space – both to perform much-needed research to benefit life on Earth and to affect how we view and connect with our planet,” said Space Perspective Founder and Co-CEO Jane Poynter.

The balloon Space Perspective plans to use is the size of a football field, and is attached to a capsule that can hold up to eight people. It may not be commercial space travel, but it’s the closest option available for now.
