For many people, taking a nap during the day is crucial for productivity. While some may have trouble working after waking up from their snooze, others get the perfect amount of rest and energy to push them through the rest of the day. There are arguments on both sides for the benefits of napping, but now a new study claims it could be the amount of time napping that is impacting one’s health.

The recent study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2020 digital conference, found that taking a nap for longer than an hour may raise the risk of death and heart disease. “Daytime napping is common all over the world and is generally considered a healthy habit. A common view is that napping improves performance and counteracts the negative consequences of ‘sleep debt’. Our study challenges these widely held opinions,” said Dr. Zhe Pan of Guangzhou Medical University.

While only 39 percent of the 313,000 participants analyzed for the study claimed to take naps, they found that longer naps led to a 30 percent higher risk of “all-cause death” and a 34 percent greater chance of cardiovascular disease. Taking naps may be good for daily energy and health, but people need to remember to keep it short.
