For Vince Gilligan, there aren’t many mistakes to admit to when it comes to his two beloved television series, ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul.’ Both the original show, and its follow up, are critically acclaimed, and have gained a large following. However, there’s one decision Gilligan almost made, that he now regrets and is happy to have been proven wrong.
A fan favorite on ‘Better Call Saul,’ villain Lalo Salamanca, played by Tony Dalton, was a name mentioned by lawyer Saul Goodman in ‘Breaking Bad, but was never expected to make it into the show’s prequel series. “I’m embarrassed to admit this now, but back in Season One or Two, when I was more active on the show, Peter kept saying, ‘We’ve gotta answer who Lalo is,’ and I finally said, ‘I don’t know that we need to answer every single question,” said Gilligan.
Of course, Lalo was eventually included, and now even Gilligan says of the decision, “man, I was wrong.” Lalo entered the show during season four, and has been involved with the series since. While most of Gilligan’s decisions have been right, keeping this character out would have definitely been a mistake.
