Many metroplex residents are still recovering from the deadly storms last week.
Some folks are just now getting their electricity restored, and hundreds of people are temporarily homeless after a crane crashed into an apartment building. Residents of Elan City Lights were forced to immediately relocate while leaving their possessions behind. A couple of well-known media members have organized an emergency fundraiser for the victims.
Former WFAA news anchors and current hosts of
morning after vodcast Ron Corning and Alexa Conomos quickly pooled together their local resources and planned “AID FOR ELAN”. The event will be held Tuesday, June 18 from 4-7 p.m. at
Big Al’s Smokehouse (3317 Inwood Rd, Dallas, TX 75235). Partnering with
Dwell With Dignity, a nonprofit that supports Dallas’ homeless community, AID FOR ELAN proceeds will directly benefit the 500+
Elan City Lights tenants who were displaced when a
construction crane crashed into the apartment building due to 71-mph winds.
Through
Dallasites 101, a media and events company, residents from Elan City Lights have been invited to attend Tuesday’s fundraiser as guests of honor. Corning and Conomos, who built a loyal following during their time at Channel 8, recently launched
morning after, a weekly show based in Dallas. They will broadcast live as attendees enjoy beer and BBQ. It's open to the public, and they will be accepting donations (cash, gift cards, clothing, toiletries, etc.) for those who were affected in the incident.
This hometown catastrophe struck a chord with Corning who said, “I was watching the horrific footage and was moved to do something to help these people in need. We’re all Dallasites, and we need to come together for each other. They need a big hug. But they also need life necessities we all take for granted.”
AID FOR ELAN is supplementing a drive to collect food, water bottles, dog food, kitchen supplies, etc. Partners include Dallasites 101, Rahr & Sons Brewing, Dog & Kitty City and Summit Trucking. If you cannot attend, they are accepting donations and volunteers via this crowd-sourced spreadsheet.
