Now, hold up, it's not the crickets and other exoskeleton-y critters we humans will have to rely on to survive in future decades. Phew. That would be pretty unfortunate if we had to choose...

The Earth is busy trying to clean up our mess by evolving microbial life to chomp away at the garbage we've dumped from the top of Mt. Everest to the island of trash floating in the oceans. A new study, published in the journal Microbial Ecology, says there are already 95 microbial enzymes known to degrade plastic, often found in bacteria in garbage dumps and other places polluted with plastic.

At some point, you've gotta imagine the Earth will be like, "ah yes, it's the humans that are the problem..." *gulp*. By then, hopefully, we'll have a death ray to teach the dumb ol' Earth a lesson!"
