While growing up may seem like a trivial podcast theme, both singers have been in the music and entertainment industries for the majority of their lives. Dua Lipa was a child model until she signed a record deal at age 19, and Billie Eilish has been wildly successful in music since her 2015 hit "Ocean Eyes" at age 14. This awarded the two with a particularly unique experience in growing up alongside their careers, fans, and artistry.
And though she’s glad to have developed beyond her debut, Eilish told the "One Kiss" singer that she still misses the “innocence” she had. “I would just say that nerves never held me back. And I miss that version of me,” she recalled happily. “I feel like I still have that in me. But, you know, when I was a bit younger and starting out…. That period of me was just, oh, my God, I just didn't give a s***. And I thank God because I wouldn't have done all the stuff that I did. I was fearless.”
Eilish has talked about her struggles with growing up in the public eye, and further revealed that her greatest growing pains have been in her transition from teenagehood to adulthood. “The jump between 18 and 21 is a big jump. Just mentally and physically and realistically,” she said on the podcast. “But it's been, honestly, everything about it.”
For Eilish, the years 18 to 21 brought about significant changes, including her first concert tour, world tour, first studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, and all its subsequent popularity and awards. With all this success occurring as she’s still growing into her own, Eilish battles with self-doubt. Speaking candidly, she told Lipa, “I've been having to, kind of, try again, convince myself that it's okay, and that I haven't lost it. It's just different… The way that I exist in the room is different. I feel like my voice has completely changed since then.” She admitted that, “it's hard to accept change,” and yet, is able to rationalize that growing up is just part of the process. “And I feel like more recently, I've gotten a little bit more like, ‘oh, okay, it's just changed’ and I'm just figuring that out and trying to reel that in,” she said. “Sometimes, like when change is forced upon you and you're outside of your comfort zone, that's where things get really interesting. And it's terrifying and scary… but you just have to go on [through] that feeling.”
Developing her sense of self and musicianship, she believes, has changed her for the better. And especially now, as she and songwriter-producer brother FINNEAS are working on her third album. “FINNEAS and I are just, hate to say it, but only starting to really hit our stride for this next album I think” she hinted. “But I'm feeling good about it.”
