Modest Mouse recently returned with their first new album since 2015 when they dropped The Golden Casket on June 25 and it’s been well worth the wait.

Frontman Isaac Brock joined Audacy’s Bryce Segall on New Arrivals and explained why it was time for a new Modest Mouse record and the departure in sound from his previous work. “I was pretty aware that I couldn’t put out something that was too close to the others this time because people's interests wane,” Brock said. “If you made their favorite record 15 years ago, then you better make a new record.”
After Brock put out Modest Mouse’s 2015 record Strangers To Ourselves, he admitted he went down ”several kooky rabbit holes” when it came to making music. This included plugging in drum machines to guitar amps and leaving them running overnight.
“I didn’t even record most of it, I just enjoyed it and got really fixated on it,” he said. Brock had immense amounts of fun during this period and it helped open him up when it came time to write for the next album.
Brock also revealed he has a batch of songs recorded that he isn’t sure what to do with. One option he laid out on the table was potentially releasing it as Ugly Casanova, one of Brock’s bands that put out their only album in 2002.
“Work on it started in 2014,” he says, “I keep just d***ing with it so it’s as new as about six months ago. And it’s still getting worked on, some of it’s still just in the process of I keep digging in and deciding that it needs to be different.”
While Brock admitted that the material he records could fall under the Modest Mouse or Ugly Casanova label, he brought up an idea that would certainly humor many. “I did think of taking Ugly Casanova on tour and just using everyone in the band to do it,” he said.
Bryce and Isaac also got into a discussion about a collaboration of his that’s been years in the making. One with Big Boi. “At the time we were working on those things, it was three of the songs that ended up on the last record. Like ‘Lampshades On Fire,’ which there’s a Big Boi version of that. We keep meaning to put out.”
We’re with you Isaac, the whole world needs to hear a Modest Mouse/Big Boi collaboration.
