After filming for a year and editing for a year, Cutler starts by saying, “what a thrilling ride.” He continues, “what a great adventure to be with her on, and we loved the results and we loved the response.”

The longtime documentarian shares, “it’s a great time for documentary. You know the success of all the streamers has forced everybody to recognize that audiences love these films. They love nonfiction, they love great stories about the real world well told, and so there’s this incredibly healthy marketplace for docs.”

R.J. was able to follow the “bad guy” artist at just the right time. He had access to Billie as the ascent of her career reached stratospheric levels, while also avoiding any complications that COVID-19 restrictions would have brought on in 2020.

The documentarian behind such films like The September Issue and Belushi shares that he is grateful for the opportunities that streaming platforms provide because it allows “tens of millions of people” all over the world to be able to watch documentaries.

While Billie Eilish has accomplished major feats at just 19-years-old, Culter tells us “my interest was in telling her story from the perspective of how hard she works, how much she cares about the work that she does, the formation of an artist with this incredibly strong family behind her.” He adds, “and for me, it was an incredible opportunity to tell the story of a young artist coming of age and a young woman coming of age, in this moment at the same time. And I felt those stories are going to resonate with each other and these are important stories to tell.”

From the moment Billie and her family met with R.J. he says they all agreed that it felt like the right thing to all work on together.
