“Taylor Hawkins died yesterday,” Farrell says in the start of his 5-minute tribute video on Instagram. “He was my best friend. Beloved in my home by my wife, my children, even my dogs… He was one of the most passionate drummers I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. When I think of him, I sum it up with one word: Velocity. He had the gift to maintain a confident, striking and stroking velocity on drums.”
After sharing more memories and clips with Hawkins, Farrell is joined on screen by his wife, Etty Lau Farrell, who shares the last audio message the couple received from Hawkins.
“Take care of each other, and I’ll take care of me,” Hawkins can be heard saying in the voice message. “I will see you guys in Sao Paolo [at Lollapalooza Brazil]. I love, love, love, love you guys. Sleep tight.”
Farrell took part in what was unknowingly Hawkins last performance as the Foo Fighters took the stage March 20, for a performance at Lollapalooza Argentina. Together, they performed a rendition of “Been Caught Stealing,” by Jane’s Addiction.
Perry concluded his tribute video by saying, “The only sense that I can make of the tragedy is to know that Taylor’s now in heaven.” He continued, “He can hear us. What I’m going to do this day forward is to try to make music that I think Taylor would really love.”
New information surrounding Hawkins’ death continues to trickle in as the days continue to pass since his unexpected death. As of now, it is known that Hawkins passed away in his hotel room on Friday, March 25, just before he was set to perform with the band in Colombia.
Reports from Colombia’s Attorney General’s office state that authorities found at least 10 different substances in his system. Even with the number of drugs in his system, the official cause of death has still not been revealed
