According to MLB reporter Jon Heyman, Michael King has declined his player option for the 2027 season, and will become an unrestricted free agent. By declining the final two years and $58 million remaining on his contract, he triggers a $5 million buyout from the Padres. King had a 12-10 record with a 3.21 ERA and 1.18 WHIP to go along with 159 strikeouts in 185 innings for the Padres in 2026. The two sides can still agree to a new contract that would bring King back to the Padres.
