(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Long Island bar is drawing criticism for reportedly setting up a macabre betting pool that asks players to predict the number of shootings that will occur in New York City and Chicago over the Labor Day weekend.
“Let the shooting sprees begin!” says a social-media post attributed to The Cliffton, a tavern in Patchogue.
The post includes a photograph of a grid resembling a Super Bowl pool, with players asked to pick the number of shootings that will occur in each city, in hopes of winning a jackpot.
The grim contest comes as New York has experienced a surge in gun violence. Chicago’s persistent problem with shootings and homicides is well-known.
“It is foolish at best and disgusting at its worst,” he tells TV news station 4 New York.
The mayor said he hopes the police and state liquor authority look into what appears to be illegal wagering.
The station says it could not reach bar operators for comment.
