How George Clooney Made His Tequila Brand a Billion-Dollar Business

In 2013, Clooney co-founded Casamigos Tequila with the help of his friend Rande Gerber.

The idea started after the duo built vacation homes together in Mexico.

They had been tasting different tequila brands and searching for something smoother, when they decided to create their own.

What started off as a private venture between friends turned into something much bigger. The pair went on to purchase a distillery in Mexico to create the tequila.

Casamigos made its way to shelves, earning millions of dollars until Clooney sold the company for one billion dollars to Diageo in 2018.

After the sale, in an email to CNBC, Clooney said: "If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion dollar company, I don't think we would have said yes. This reflects Diageo's belief in our company and our belief in Diageo. But we're not going anywhere. We'll still be very much a part of Casamigos."

The tequila was named after what the pair called their Mexican properties, meaning “house of friends” in Spanish.
