CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The governor of Mississippi is firing back at Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot over her comments about illegal guns that are found on the streets of Chicago.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted this week and appeared on MSNBC, where she blamed Mississippi, for one, as a source of illegal guns that pour into Chicago.
"We can't stop things that happen outside of our borders; 60 percent of the illegal guns that come into Chicago every year are from out of state, from Indiana, from Mississippi, from other states that have lax gun laws," she said.
"As long as we have this proliferation of illegal guns that is pouring in from outside of our borders, we are going to continue to fight an uphill battle."
But Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves would have none of that.
"What I would say to anyone who wants to blame Mississippians, the people of Mississippi for the increase in crime in the city of Chicago, that doesn't pass the smell test," he said. "It doesn't make sense. It's just, quite frankly a conspiracy theory that just doesn't work."
Governor Reeves tweeted that the Mayor's comments are a "pathetic excuse for the failure, left-wing experiments in undermining police and letting criminals run free."
The NRA tweeted "don’t blame Mississippi for the failures of Chicago’s leftist leaders."
