October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And it's a time to bring attention to the importance of early detection and screenings while recognizing those who have experienced this disease.

Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer? Or that breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer found in women? While these stats can be super overwhelming, the good news is that when breast cancer is detected early, it's significantly more treatable.

That's why we've partnered with our friends at Virtua Health to provide tips and tricks for performing a breast self-exam.

Tip 1: Perform self-exams monthly.

We suggest performing a self-breast exam a few days before or after your period. And if you're post-menopausal, perform a self-breast exam on the same day every month – we suggest the first of the month...it's just easier that way.

Tip 2: Self-exam in the shower.

With the pads of your 3 middle fingers, check both boobs and armpits for lumps, knots, or other changes. We recommend pressing down with light, medium, and firm pressure.

Tip 3: Self-exam in the mirror.

With your arms at your sides, visually inspect your boobs for any noticeable changes like swelling, dimpling, and other skin irregularities. A pro tip: flex your chest muscles a few times – it can help identify changes.

Tip 4: Self-exam lying down.

When you're lying down, breast tissue spreads out evenly, which can help make lump detection easier. We suggest placing a pillow under your right shoulder and putting your right arm behind your head. Then, follow the same technique from tip #2. Then repeat on the opposite side.

When it comes down to it, self-exams are one of the best ways to stay on top of your health. They help you keep in touch with your body and are a simple method for detecting warning signs.
