Over the course of a six-month season, it can’t always be smooth sailing. No sport has more ebbs and flows than baseball, a 162-game crucible that chews players up and spits them out. Tensions will inevitably rise as the black cloud of disappointment rears its ugly head, which is why it’s vital to have a short memory in this game.
The Phillies, slogging through the final leg of an exhausting 10-game road trip with stops in Washington, Atlanta and Dunedin, came into Sunday’s series finale running on absolute fumes. Tired and playing poorly (the Jays jumped out to an early 8-0 lead), the Fightin’ Phils unraveled before our eyes, culminating in an ugly dugout spat between manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura, who had just cost the Phillies a run by committing his second error of the afternoon. Girardi, feisty as ever with the media, was in no mood to talk about it after the game, though luckily his beef with Segura was short-lived as the two combatants appear to have put their lover’s quarrel behind them.
“We love each other,” said Segura, who said he and Girardi smoothed things over on the phone during Monday’s off day. “Everything has passed and we’re all good.”
Girardi wouldn’t divulge much about his conversation with Segura, but confirmed the two had indeed settled their differences. “I told him I love him,” said Girardi via Scott Gleeson of USA Today. “Every little spat that you have with someone that you love at home, you don't go and tell everyone around you, do you?"
Finally back home after a harrowing week spent traveling up and down the east coast, the Phillies rebounded from Sunday’s meltdown with a win in Tuesday night’s series opener, dispatching Miami on the strength of a colossal, eighth-inning rally (seven runs on seven hits). Segura played a clean game at second (pitcher Zack Wheeler was responsible for Philadelphia’s only error) while also going 1-for-4 at the dish with a walk and an RBI single.
