There were so many incredible wins while honoring the incomparable lives we lost. Here are the top moments you missed at the 2021 NAACP Image Awards.
1.The night kicked off with a message from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris
President Biden saying, "Black culture is American culture," was the moment.
2.Jazmine Sullivan's ethereal performance of "Pick Up Your Feelings"
In a sky blue ensemble and a floral-laced microphone stand, the singer brought down the house. She was nominated for Outstanding Female Artist.
3.Issa Rae breaks Tracee Ellis Ross' 6-year winning streak
Before anyone tries to question Issa Rae's acceptance speech, Black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross has won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series nine times, but for the past six years, those wins have been consecutive. So, in the great words of Issa Rae— "bad b****** don't lose often but when they do, they don't care."
4.Maxwell's performance might've been a hint at new music
It's been 25 years since his debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite was released. His performance was him walking down the NYC streets singing to his iconic hit, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." However, he buzzed into a "508" address. New music on May 8th, perhaps?
5.D-Nice wins Entertainer of the Year
The King of Club Quarantine who kept us at home jamming every night never-ending parties beat out Tyler Perry, Regina King, Trevor Noah and Viola Davis.
