When five-month-old Cannon Buchholtz’s parents put him to bed in his crib the night of July 2, there was no reason to think he was in danger. Then minutes later, an oak tree crashed into his room.
Courtney and Kale Buchholtz said it sounded like lightning had hit their house in Prairieville, La. The baby monitor told a different story.
The screen showed tree debris showering the room, including the crib. Upon arrival in Cannon’s room, they were shocked by what they saw.
"When I saw the tree I almost couldn’t even comprehend what was happening, that there was a tree in our house," Courtney Buchholtz told "Good Morning America." "And the thought of it being on top of Cannon, I felt physically ill."
To the couple’s relief, they heard Cannon crying. When they made their way to him, they discovered the infant survived the incident unscathed, save for needing a bath.
It’s now the second time in five years that the Buchholtzes have to rebuild their home after a flood in 2016, but the couple is still breathing a sigh of relief.
"It makes you realize a house is just a house and the material things can be replaced," said Kale Buchholtz. "Family is what matters."
