The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame fan vote has surpassed one million votes as Eminem and Duran Duran represent the two most popular nominees.
As of this writing, Slim Shady leads the way with over 145,600 votes while Duran Duran has over 123,750. Rounding out the top five are Pat Benatar (116,400), Dolly Parton (98,540), and Eurythmics (75,336).
Voting will remain open on the Rock Hall’s website through April 29. At that point, the top five acts, as selected by fans, will make up a “fans ballot” that will be counted alongside the over 1,000 ballots sent to current Rock Hall inductees, music historians, and music industry professionals.
Artists up for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year include the aforementioned Eminem, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics, and Dolly Parton, along with Beck, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, Rage Against the Machine, DEVO, Dionne Warwick, A Tribe Called Quest, Kate Bush, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, and the New York Dolls.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Greg Harris recently gave Audacy a sneak peek at how inductees are selected. After a lengthy meeting where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation determines the full list of nominees, the ballot gets sent out. “This ballot goes out to a voting body of about a thousand, which is all the other living inductees,” Harris said.
“James Hetfield votes, Smokey Robinson votes, Bruce Springsteen votes, the guys in Def Leppard vote, and when it comes back, the top five vote getters are elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
