Vin Diesel is used to wearing many hats as star and filmmaker of the wildly popular “Fast & Furious” franchise.
But Diesel, 53, may have his sights set on becoming a triple threat in the classic Hollywood sense by adding singing and dancing to his list of talents.
On Wednesday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” the “F9” star said he is not only open to doing a musical version of the “Fast & Furious “ franchise, but he is “dying” to do a musical at all.
In fact, as Diesel explained to Clarkson, he came much closer to starring in a musical than most fans would expect.
“Well, I'm dying to do a musical... I've been dying to do a musical my whole life. I was this close to doing ‘Guys and Dolls’ with Steven Spielberg, but we ended up not doing that,” he told Clarkson.
“Fast & Furious” lovers might be surprised to learn that the actor who plays the franchise’s lead character Dominic Toretto considered “Guys and Dolls.” But it starts to make more sense when Diesel revealed what tempted him to take on the project.
“For the longest time, I thought the Nathan Detroit role in ‘Guys and Dolls’ would be a very interesting one to revamp, the character that Frank Sinatra played,” Diesel told Clarkson.
It makes sense how creating an iconic Sinatra character in his own image could entice a star of Diesel’s caliber.
Vin Diesel’s readiness for a different type of project may come as no surprise after recent comments he made to Associated Press in which he said the “Fast” franchise — or at least his role in it — will come to an end after 2024.
"Every story deserves its own ending," he said during a press junket for “F9” earlier this month. "I know people are going to feel like it doesn’t have to end, but I think all good things should.”
“F9” is in theaters now. Buy tickets on Fandango.
