Glam-metal parody band Steel Panther performed three shows in Florida this past weekend as the scene looked like any pre-pandemic concert. According to MetalSucks, the shows were packed with concertgoers, most of whom were maskless despite venues insisting attendees wear them while not eating or drinking.
During the band’s show in St. Petersburg, Steel Panther welcomed pro wrestler and Fozzy singer Chris Jericho to the stage who handled vocal duties for a cover of the Judas Priest classic “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.”
Jericho and his band Fozzy performed a show during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota this past summer, an event which contributed an estimated 260,000 new cases of COVID-19.
At Steel Panther’s Orlando show, *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone joined the band on stage to perform a medley of songs.
The packed crowds seen at the Steel Panther shows goes against the recommendations of a recent study on how to safely hold concerts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this November, German scientists released their findings from a study looking at how coronavirus could be prevented from spreading at large indoor concerts. With over 1,400 volunteers in attendance at an indoor arena, scientists found that social distancing was a significant source of risk reduction. Periods of close contact such as entrance into the venue and breaks during the show represented periods of higher risk.
