Any time you see a player get carted to the locker room, there's a fear of a long-term injury. That was the case Friday night when Patriots running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery suffered an ankle injury and needed to be carted to the room after first being helped off the field.
It seems the Patriots and Montgomery may have caught a break, though. During his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show Monday morning, Bill Belichick provided a slightly encouraging update that makes it sound as though Montgomery may have avoided serious injury.
"We haven't practiced since we've been back here, so we'll see how things go today, see what he's able to do. But I think he's doing all right," Belichick said.
Montgomery will have two weeks to recover before the Patriots' season opener in Miami on Sept. 11, and we wouldn't expect any sort of definitive update on his Week 1 availability until much closer to then.
At the very least, though, it sounds like Montgomery isn't expected to be out long-term. That's good news for the Patriots, as the versatile veteran is expected to provide depth behind Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson as both a runner and pass-catcher.
If Montgomery misses time, it would open up an opportunity for one of Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris or J.J. Taylor to claim the third-string running back job early on.
The Patriots and every other NFL team have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to get down to an initial 53-man roster.
