Brandon Workman becoming part of the solution to whatever ails the Red Sox' bullpen this season is now in doubt.
The reliever has triggered an opt-out with the team, having not been promoted from Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox have 48 hours from the time the decision was made to add Workman to the 26-man roster or he becomes a free agent.
After a rocky first outing with Worcester, Workman had impressed with the WooSox. The righty didn't give up run in six of his seven appearances, allowing just two hits.
"It’s his right, it’s his part of the contract," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora regarding Workman, who signed a minor-league deal after being let go by the Cubs. "I’m not sure if he did opt-out or he’s going to but that’s part of the contract. We’re very pleased with the way he’s throwing the ball. He’s been throwing his cutter a little bit better. Velocity is OK, his breaking ball has been great. But as of now, that’s all I have. He’s going to opt out. I think we’ve got two days to make a decision. We’ll see how it goes. ... There’s a lot of stuff on the table. Right now, we’ve got a 26-man roster and he’s not part of it.”
