Chris Sale was awesome on the mound for the Red Sox Thursday. But the shirt he was rocking in his post-game presser might’ve been even better than his performance

While speaking with reporters following the Red Sox’s 12-2 win over the Twins, Sale was wearing a “Jerry Remy Fight Club” t-shirt. The beloved broadcaster stepped away from NESN earlier this month to undergo treatment for lung cancer.

Remy, 68, has overcome four previous cancer relapses since first being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008.

Sale also gave one of the quotes of the season, telling reporters he was “probably more pissed off on a baseball field” than he’s been in a while against the Twins, whom he largely shut down for 5.1 innings. The only blemish on Sale’s night was a two-run homer he surrendered to Minnesota third baseman Willians Astudillo.

Besides that, Sale was immaculate — literally. He finished an inning with nine pitches and nine strikes.

Watching Sale return from Tommy John surgery has been a joy, and I’m not just talking about his season-saving performances on the mound. The seven-time All-Star has spoken often about how his nearly two years away from baseball provided him with a whole new appreciation for the game.

“I can put it in simple form: If you really like eating cake, and someone takes cake away for two years, and then you get it back again, you’re going to be fired up,” Sale said this week on WEEI. “I never knew how much I loved playing baseball until it was gone.”

And we never knew how much we loved Sale until he was gone. By the way, for those wondering, you can purchase your “Jerry Remy Fight Club" shirts here.
