Brandon Workman's career path has certainly taken a turn for the worse.
The Cubs have designated Workman for assignment after signing the former Red Sox closer to a one-year, $1 million deal that could have been worth up to $3 million with incentives.
The 32-year-old Workman only saw action in eight innings for the Cubs, compiling a 6.75 ERA and .333 batting average against.
The reliever allowed three runs in each of his last two outings, including Tuesday when he managed just two outs.
Heading into the 2020 season it was believed Workman might be one of the most sought-after free agent relievers in the free agent market. But after being dealt to Philadelphia along with Heath Hembree for Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold, Workman struggled to a 6.92 ERA in 14 appearances with the Phillies.
Workman notched 10 wins and 16 saves with a 1.88 ERA and big-league-best .123 batting average against with the Red Sox in 2019.
