The NHL’s outdoor game in Lake Tahoe this year between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 21 will still have a dose of Doc Emrick.

No, he is not coming out of retirement for the game, but NBC plans to air a documentary special on the famed announcer as part of its pre-game coverage leading up to the game.

“Doc Emrick – The Voice of Hockey” will debut at 2 p.m. ET on Feb. 21 and will include interviews with 20 NHL players and broadcasting colleagues discussing Emrick’s illustrious career and his impact on the sport of hockey, NBC announced on Wednesday.

Among those interviewed include Wayne Gretzkey, Martin Brodeur, Sidney Crosby, T.J. Oshie, Zach Parise, Blake Coleman, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and commentators Eddie Olczyck, Pierre McGuire, Al Michaels, Bob Costas, John Davidson, Kathryn Tappen and more.

Emrick, 74, announced his retirement back in October, which was somewhat of a surprise to hockey fans.

Emrick had spent 47 years broadcasting professional hockey, voicing games in the AHL for the Hershey Bears and Maine Mariners before doing radio for the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils on his way to becoming the national voice for the NHL.

He spent the last 15 seasons as the lead national play-by-play voice for NBC. In total, Emrick called 22 Stanley Cup Finals, 14 All-Star Games and six Olympics.
