The Fabian Lysell era in Boston is officially over. The Bruins traded their 2021 first-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday in exchange for 23-year-old forward Ivan Ivan (yes, that's his real name).
Lysell was already trending towards "bust" territory after getting drafted 21st overall five years ago, with only 12 NHL games to his name. His development had completely stalled out over his four seasons in the AHL with Providence. After an encouraging 50 points in 56 games in 2023-24, Lysell regressed to 34 points in 52 games in 2024-25 and 42 points in 57 games this past season.
How much of the blame for that falls on the Bruins vs. Lysell himself will certainly be a matter of debate. The reality is it's likely a bit of both. The Bruins appeared to stunt Lysell's offensive game in the name of trying to make him more of a 200-foot player. Lysell, meanwhile, was too inconsistent when it came to his effort level and decision-making. His last two training camps, when NHL forward jobs were open, were particularly disappointing.
Ivan, meanwhile, has spent most of the last three seasons with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL. He had 26 points (11g, 15a) in 66 games this year. He has also played 49 NHL games with the Avalanche, with five goals and four assists.
Lysell and Ivan are both restricted free agents in need of new contracts. Lysell would have needed to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL again, while Ivan can be sent down without waivers.
