Kevin Plawecki talks song, free agency
At this point a year ago, Kevin Plawecki and Christian Vazquez were the no-doubt-about-it catching duo for the Red Sox, representing key voices in the clubhouse.
Now, each will be playing for their third new team in just the last six months.
After spending the final three months of his 2022 season with the world champion Houston Astros, Christian Vazquez now finds himself as a member of the Minnesota Twins. And now, the Pirates have announced they are the new home for Plawecki - who had finished last season with the Rangers.
The 32-year-old Plawecki has signed a minor-league deal with Pittsburgh.
In 2022, the catcher played in a total of 63 games, finishing hitting .220 with a .572 OPS. It as his third season with the Red Sox, who go into camp counting on the catching duo of Reese McGuire and Connor Wong.
The Pirates' top backstop is Austin Hedges, with Tyler Heineman and Jason Delay the other catchers on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster.
