The Miami Marlins' search for a general manager to replace Mike Hill has ended with a historic decision.

Kim Ng, who has spent several years in various executive roles around Major League Baseball, was announced as the newest GM of the Marlins on Friday morning. In doing so, Ng becomes the first female and the first Asian American to fill the role with a Major League ballclub.

Ng has over three decades of experience working with teams such as the White Sox, Yankees and Dodgers, and has most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations for the league, a role she has been in since 2011.

In a statement, Ng labeled her new job as the "honor of my career" and explained her goals:

We are building for the long term in South Florida, developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success. This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals.

My goal is now to bring championship baseball to Miami. I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve.

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter released a statement, as well, adding that Ng's "extensive work in expanding youth baseball and softball initiatives will enhance our efforts to grow the game among our local youth as we continue to make a positive impact on the South Florida community."

The Marlins finished with a 31-29 record and made the playoffs in 2020, defying expectations after a 57-105 finish in 2019. Their season came to an end in the NLDS in a sweep by the Braves, though the Marlins once again defied the odds by defeating the 34-26 first-place Cubs in the Wild Card round. Don Mattingly was recognized for leading the team through a strong yet tumultuous campaign.

Several social media responses to the hire were filled with excitement and support of the move.
