The Red Sox have landed a player many believed was going to be the first overall pick in this year's Major League Draft, high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer hails from Eastlake (CA) High, the same school Adrian Gonzalez was drafted out of with the first overall pick in 2000.
"I did see it coming," Mayer told MLB Network. "I knew they were high on me."
He has been compared to Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager. In 137 plate appearances he hit .391 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs, scored 46 runs and stole 19 bases. For more on Mayer, click here.
More to come on Mayer, who has committed to play at USC if he chooses not to sign with the Red Sox (which seems unlikely) ...
In a somewhat surprise move, the Pirates took Louisville catcher Henry Davis with the first overall pick. Another player linked to the Red Sox, Jack Leiter, was taken at No. 2 by the Rangers. Detroit took Jackson Jobe with the third overall pick.
