The Celtics need to do something to shake things up. This we know. But how bold a move is Brad Stevens willing to make when it comes to steering this team down a more successful path?
Well, this would be bold ...
Celtics get: Damian Lillard.
Trailblazers get: Jaylen Brown, Payton Pritchard, 2021 first-round pick.
The first obstacle this trade would run into is Lillard's existence in Portland. He is undoubtedly the face of a franchise that is desperately trying to get some traction in the Western Conference. And, he's still really good.
But, there are rumblings.
Stephen A. Smith reported Friday that the Knicks have their eyes on a trade for Lillard, throwing in the Clippers and Heat as additional destinations. And, let's be honest, if there is a time to deal Lillard it is now.
The guard will be turning 31 years old on July 15. He also will be owed $176.2 million over the next four seasons, getting paid $39.3 million in 2021-22.
For the Celtics, the combination of Tatum and Lillard puts them in more of a conference finals conversation than what currently exists.
Make not mistake about it, moving on from Brown is a tough one. He is already a star in this league, and at 24 years old is only going to get better. But, for whatever reason, the dynamic duo that he helps make up with this team simply hasn't been dynamic enough.
For Portland, it would be getting back an All-Star who is signed through the 2023-24 season. There is also the addition of Pritchard, a hometown hero who has proven to be a serviceable rotation player. The first-rounder also figures to be a useful player. But the Celtics have enough useful players. They need difference-makers, and Lillard is one of the best in the business.
