Another week, another high-profile quarterback appears to on the verge of being traded.
After just completing the Matthew Stafford saga -- ending with the Lions dealing him to the Rams -- now we have the curious case of Carson Wentz.
ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reported Saturday that the Eagles are expected to move Wentz in the coming days.
So, should this be the Patriots guy?
The 28-year-old Wentz obviously has as much talent as any quarterback who might be available, passing for more than 4,000 yards in 2019 to go along with 27 touchdowns. Two seasons before that he managed 33 TDs and just seven interceptions while making the Pro Bowl.
But all kinds of red flags went up when it came to Wentz in 2020, with the Eagles ultimately replacing him with Jalen Hurts. The former second overall pick led the NFL with 15 interceptions win his 12 starts, just one fewer than his touchdown total.
Then there is his contract.
If Wentz is traded before the third day of the NFL calendar in March he will be owed $23.7 million a year over the next two seasons, although an acquiring team can release him after 2023 without any obligations. If he is kept after that the next two seasons Wentz will be owed an average of $25.5 million in each campaign.
So, how should the Patriots approach this? Who says no ...
Patriots get: Wentz.
Eagles get: No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
There are other quarterbacks the Patriots could dangle that first-round pick for, such as Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo or Sam Darnold. Or perhaps they want to use it for the likes of a Mac Jones, or even another North Dakota State product Trey Lance (if he slides that far).
But it wouldn't seem to be outrageous to think that this is a scenario that could be broached.
Thoughts?
