CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — An investigation is underway into what caused an early morning apartment fire in Camden. More than 20 people were able to escape without injury.

"We were all asleep. I smelled the smoke, we got out," said Myrtle Place Apartments resident Nilsa Santiago.

"I got my mother and my brother and we started knocking on all of my neighbors' doors, because there are eight apartments in here. We got most everybody out safe. Thank God, because God is good."

However, Santiago said her cat didn't get out with her. "They're in there with a dog to try to see if they can smell my cat. My cat is still in the apartment," she said, fighting back tears.

Nonetheless, Santiago said working smoke alarms saved a lot of lives.

"22 people were in these buildings. 22 peoples lives got saved, thank God! Smoke detectors are very important. Our smoke detectors were working," she said.

The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents from the eight units.
