PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 23-year-old inmate is facing murder charges after the death of a fellow inmate inside a Burlington County jail.
Burlington County prosecutors charged Trevor Banton with first-degree murder last week for the death of fellow inmate Yasin Sellers, 24, at Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Chesterfield.
The investigation began on July 17 after a disturbance inside a prison gym. Prosecutors said it happened after a religious service attended by several inmates.
Correctional officers found Sellers slumped over on the floor and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, Sellers collapsed after being assaulted by Banton.
Banton was already serving up to 60 months for an aggravated assault, according to court records. His case will be presented to a grand jury for possible indictment, pending a Superior Court appearance to be scheduled soon.
