PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities in Norristown arrested a man wanted since last fall, after he tried to run from police and then allegedly shot at them.
Now he's recovering in custody, after they fired back at him.
The incident began around 6 a.m. Saturday when Norristown police spotted 29-year-old Mark Simpkins Jr. heading into a store.
Simpkins had been wanted since last October on an arrest warrant issued by Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole.
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said after more officers responded to the area and tried to stop Simpkins, he ran away. He fled in between two homes near the 600 block of Lafayette Street and fired at least once at officers.
They fired back and hit Simpkins in the leg, he was treated at a local hospital for his injury.
Officials said during the arrest they recovered multiple bags of cocaine, a pistol magazine and a pistol he allegedly used to fire at police. According to the DA's office, that gun was reported stolen early last year.
Simpkins was charged with aggravated assault on police officers, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, person not to possess a firearm and related drug offenses.
