MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — An 18-year-old has been sentenced more than a year after he shot and killed a 16-year-old Upper Darby High School student.
“Never would I imagine I would be sitting in the courtroom for my son’s murder,” said Talaya Shaw. Her son, 16-year-old Khalief Webster, was gunned down near their Upper Darby home in May 2025.
“It’s been hard. It’s been devastating. Parenthood looks different,” she said.
Michael Nixon was 17 at the time of the shooting and charged as an adult.
He pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in what prosecutors called an unprovoked attack. Police said he walked up to Webster, who was riding a bike, shot him in the chest, and left him for dead. Nixon then fled to New Jersey.
He was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 to 36 years in prison.
Shaw believes the sentence is a slap on the wrist compared to the loss of her son.
“[Nixon] didn’t call for help,” she said. “He didn’t say, ‘I shot somebody, please call 911.’ You know what he did? He ran away.”
