PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was carjacked overnight and opened fire seven times on the suspect.

Police say it happened just after midnight at 56th and Pentridge streets in the Kingsessing neighborhood.

The carjacker got away with the cop’s SUV and crashed it into two nearby parked cars, but he kept going.

Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said they are not sure if the carjacker was hurt. However, the off-duty officer was not injured and was able to call 911.

“This happened very quickly,” said Small. “The officer was shaken up, as you can imagine. Just had a gun pointed at him, very close range.”

He said the perpetrator may have been wearing a mask.

Police have not made any arrests, but Small said minutes later, a young victim, possibly a teenager, walked into a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand. The driver who dropped him off sped away.

Police are questioning that gunshot victim.

A burned-out car was found a few hours later and less than 2 miles away, in Cobbs Creek. Officials confirmed it is the officer’s vehicle.
