PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Multiple Pennsylvania companies are offering to pay travel expenses for employees who live in states where abortion could be restricted.
In an email, Comcast states, “Our travel benefit includes all covered medical services and procedures, including reproductive healthcare, that aren’t available near a Comcast or NBCUniversal employee’s home.”
Burlington County resident Alexandra McGroarty is a human resources consultant and author of the book "Bridging the Gap: Reducing Gender Bias in the Workplace."
"It has become a huge topic overnight. I think there has been many CEOs that have come out and said we are going to take care of our people, now that has been met by opposition, too," McGroarty said.
"We've been in the great resignation, the candidate war on talent for quite a bit of time now, and I think the script is flipping. You are no longer lucky to be able to work for a top name. They are lucky to have you — and they are starting ... to realize we have to think of our people. Our people are the core — for our customers, for our business for finances and so we have to do right by our people. I think we are finally understanding that we have to be an employer of choice."
She says not only is equitability being considered by company leaders addressing new reproductive healthcare policies, but also the possibility of financial public backlash from the decision.
That hasn’t stopped Pittsburgh-based Duolingo. The tech company says it will expand its operations elsewhere should Pennsylvania outlaw abortion.
Donna Farrell, senior vice president of corporate communications for Independence Blue Cross, also released a statement following the Supreme Court ruling:
“For more than 80 years, Independence Blue Cross has been committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve and providing access to high-quality, affordable health care. As we work to understand the implications of complying with the Court’s decision and applicable state laws, we will be focused on supporting our associates, members, and customers.”
Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz asks in a tweet if the “woke corporations” that will help pay for their employees’ abortions will also “be equally generous supporting mothers who chose to give birth to their children.”
