Philly schools reopen registration for some of their summer programs

Programs are available for students from first through ninth grades

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The School District of Philadelphia is reopening registration for some of its summer student programs after it found itself with open seats following the initial signup period in April.

Summer school in Philadelphia is open to all students, not just those who fail a subject. After registration for summer enrichment programs at 31 schools ended in April, the district found that some locations had seats open.

For example, for first through seventh graders, about 4,500 seats were available but only 3,000 kids had signed up.

The re-opened registration period is open until 4 p.m. on June 8 for summer programs at eight elementary schools and five high schools.

School District of Philadelphia Chief Academic Supports Officer Malika Savoy-Brooks said April may not have been the best time to ask parents to think about summer.

“I think the registration timetable probably was not best for parents, but it was best for us in thinking through the logistical and operational components of it,” Savoy-Brooks said.

In all, summer programs at 31 schools provide literacy and math in the morning, with city-run arts and sports in the afternoon.

There are also bridge programs to help with the transition to eighth and ninth grades.

“The goal is to ensure that students are retaining the necessary skills and learning to support them in the bridge from their current grade to their next grade,” Savoy-Brooks said.

The reopened registration includes the following schools and programs.

For the Rising Grades 1 to 7 program:

— Cook-Wissahickon School - Rising first, third, sixth, & seventh-grade students.
— The Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP): Rising fourth through seventh-grade students.
