PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 17-year-old was shot and killed in a possible road rage incident in Center City Wednesday night. The alleged shooter drove off and hit several cars a few blocks away before fleeing on foot.
It was close to 11 p.m. when 911 calls came from the area of 15th and Pine streets for a report of gunshots. Investigators said they found the teen boy slumped over in the driver’s seat of a Mercedes sedan.
Witnesses told police they think road rage may have been a factor.
“Someone fired at least four shots from a semiautomatic weapon, striking the passenger side and then striking the 17-year-old driver on the right side of his body multiple times,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later identified him as Denis Mohamed Jaward of Wayne, Delaware County.
Witnesses told police that the shooter got back into a Nissan and drove down 15th Street. A few blocks away, at 15th and South streets, police said the shooter hit a car with two women inside, lost control, then slammed into two unoccupied parked cars.
Witnesses then said the man, and a woman, got out of the wrecked car and ran away.
Police said there are surveillance cameras in the area, and they will be looking through footage. They did not go into specifics about what may have happened between the driver and the shooter that led to shots being fired.
Overnight shootings
Additionally, two young men, ages 18 and 19, were found shot to death in Kingsessing early Thursday morning.
Philadelphia police say it happened around 1:30 a.m. on Ridgewood Street, near 54th Street.
Officers found the 18-year-old shot in an alleyway. They believe the 19-year-old was shot on a porch, then ran inside a home, where he collapsed.
There were about seven or eight people, including a small child, inside the home at the time. They are being interviewed by detectives.
Police have not made any arrests.
