Dombrowski announces extension for Thomson, seemingly indicates no major changes necessary
Philadelphia Phillies president Dave Dombrowski announced that the club has extended Rob Thomson through the 2026 season and the entire coaching staff will be back for at least another season.
"We have a good coaching staff, primarily," Dombrowski said during his season ending press conference on Tuesday. "They do a very efficient job. They did lead us to 95 wins and they've been with us for a couple years. A lot of cases three years and some beyond that...We have a good manager, they work well with the manager...He would like all of his coaches back. To me, it's pretty simple in that regard. We did have a disappointing finish, which we did, but it's hard to put that on their backs."
Despite entering the postseason as one of MLB's top three favorites to win the World Series, the Phillies were upset in the NLDS by the Mets in four games.
Dombrowski largely chalked it up to a bad series, indicating most of the team's roster is set with the exception of one starting outfielder spot and the fifth starting pitcher spot.
Dombrowski also said Trea Turner will not be changing positions and will be the Phillies' starting shortstop next season. Turner, who has nine years and over $240 million remaining on his contract, has committed 40 errors over his first two seasons with Philadelphia.
Joe Giglio reacted on Tuesday's 94WIP Midday Show to Dombrowski's press conference.
"I didn't get any sense of, 'We got to make big changes, shake it up.' It just seemed like, 'Tweak this, tweak that, if we have a different approach we'll be fine.' And I don't think most people feel that way about this team."
