There were nine penalties in Super Bowl LVII but none will be remembered more than the last.
With the Chiefs in the red zone in the final two minutes, the Eagles appeared to get a stop on 3rd & 8. However, defensive holding was called on James Bradberry to extend the Chiefs’ drive.
Instead of Jalen Hurts and the Eagles getting the ball back with nearly two minutes remaining, they had time for just one play after a squib kickoff.
Pittsburgh radio host Andrew Fillipponi of the Audacy Original Podcast “1st & Pod” explained why he feels the Eagles “absolutely got screwed” even with his hatred for Philadelphia sports fans.
“What happened for me in this game is there was a balance – like the Lady Justice – where there was my hatred for Philly sports fans and my bet on the Eagles, so it actually made me objective. They canceled each other out,” Fillipponi said (2:32 in player above). “I don’t feel bad for them because I hate the swine and filth that is the Philadelphia sports fan but they absolutely got screwed.”
Fillipponi stressed that even if the call on Bradberry was a penalty based on the rulebook, that’s not how the Super Bowl should be decided.
“I think even the ‘letter of the law’ people have a s—ty argument, which you’re going to hear a million times: ‘Slow it down. He grabbed him. It’s the letter of the law,’” he said. “Anyone who’s ever played a competitive sport will tell you what’s more important, Danny, than letter of the law is what has the standard been the entire game, and the standard was for that not to get called.
“That’s my problem with it. That didn’t get called the entire game. It was the only hold. You’re telling me the entire game with the Super Bowl on the line with big men smashing into each other at the line of scrimmage, that’s the only time there was a hold the entire game? That’s preposterous!”
He also pointed out that Patrick Mahomes threw an uncatchable pass on the play as the ball landed yards away from the intended receiver. Nevertheless, a flag was thrown and the call was made.
The Super Bowl lived up to the hype with both Hurts and Mahomes showing out, but that late penalty call may have marred what could’ve been an all-time classic.
