Birder Shocked Spotting Rare Mandarin Duck In Central Park

This duck made a very surprising visit to Central Park in New York City.

That’s because Mandarin ducks are mostly found in East Asia, although there are small groups in California and North Carolina. So when Gus Keri a birding photographer spotted its striking crimson, hunter and copper colors, he was shocked.

In fact, finding one in the United States likely means it escaped from captivity, as seen by the band on this male’s leg, experts say. They would not normally migrate to this region.

So perhaps this bird is just taking in the sites of city. We suggest seeing in a Broadway show next.
