The Jacksonville Jaguars, under new head coach Urban Meyer's watch, are of the impression that veteran quarterback-turned-tight end Tim Tebow can serve some kind of purpose this upcoming season.
But the news isn't sitting well with players across the NFL, and according to Denver Broncos defensive end Shelby Harris, he's taken it personally.
"It's just the fact that he played a whole different position. And then there's people out there who actually play that position who are now not getting the chance because he knows who the head coach is," Harris told The DA Show on Monday. "So, it's like, 'Hey, I'm going to give you a chance in the NFL -- the National Football League -- to go play a position you've never played before and try out.' That's happening to no one but Tim Tebow...
"It's nothing against him, because he's just taking the opportunity given to him. I know there's a lot of players who feel this way, it's kind of BS. Especially the ones who've been out of the league for a while, we know how hard it is to get back. All the work, all the time. It'd be different if Tim Tebow was trying out to be quarterback. The fact that he's changing his whole position, and Tim Tebow's what, 33 or 34? For a lot of players, that's when you get out of the league.
"They're giving him a chance at a new position at 33 or 34, when there's 22, 23, 24-year-olds out there who never got a chance that can actually help your roster... At the end of the day, I have nothing against the guy, I hope everything works out. It's just more of the process of how it happened. I don't wish bad on anyone. I hope he does well, I hope he succeeds. It's just the fact of all the other players who won't get that chance. That's kind of where I'm standing..."
Tebow, who officially signed a one-year, $920,000 deal with the Jaguars last Friday, was a former first-round pick of the Broncos in 2010. The former Heisman winner complied an 8-6 record as the team's starting quarterback, and appeared in two playoff games during the 2011 season. In 2012, Tebow signed a deal with the New York Jets and attempted only eight passes, and before leaving the league, he spent offseasons with the New England Patriots (2013) and Philadelphia Eagles (2015).
In 35 total NFL games, Tebow has completed 173 of 361 pass attempts for 2,422 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also rushed for 989 yards on 197 attempts and scored 12 times.
Jacksonville is scheduled to host Harris' Broncos during Week 2 of the 2021 regular season (Sept. 19, 1 p.m. ET kickoff).
