The Indianapolis Colts no longer have to keep their cards close to the vest in discussions about Carson Wentz. According to multiple reports, the team has agreed to trade the 29-year-old quarterback to the Washington Commanders, in exchange for a package of draft picks. Both teams will swap second-round selections in 2022, and the Colts will also receive a third-rounder this season and a conditional third-rounder in 2023.
Washington, which had searched high and low for an upgrade at quarterback, will also take on Wentz's entire $28 million salary for next season. If the trade fails, however, they could move on from him after 2022 without dead cap hits. The final two years of Wentz's contract don't include any guaranteed money. With this in mind, it's possible he's a stop-gap starter for the Commanders.
"I know Carson Wentz isn't a leader. I know Carson Wentz stinks. And I know Carson Wentz crumbles when the moment is the biggest... You can't tell me that this is a good move," Zach Gelb said during Wednesday's edition of The Zach Gelb Show. "I'm still dumbfounded, all these hours later, and mystified that Washington had to give up this much to land a crappy quarterback. It's mind-boggling. It's sickening.
"Because there's no way that this Carson Wentz market was as active as what the return would suggest it was. Who were you bidding against, yourself? You were bidding against yourself! And you had to give up that much... There's a reason some teams are always stuck and don't get to the top of the mountain. You can change the name, and you can have a new identity -- call yourself the Commanders. You still make the same old, bad decisions."
