So, in the true age of social media, it all began on Twitter— at least for the public. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak went back and forth over the list of confirmed performances at this year's GRAMMY Awards. Paak took it upon himself to create the hashtag, “#LetSilkSonicThrive,” and it was then that Mars penned this open letter to the Recording Academy. “If you can find it in your hearts to allow two out of work musicians to perform at your show, we would really appreciate it,” he began. “We just released a song and could really use the promotion right now. We have a lot riding on the record (and the Pelicans game next week, but that’s another story). We haven’t been able to perform for a while and we just want to sing. We’ll send in an audition tape and take as many covid tests as we need to. I promise we won’t be extra. We just really want a gig again. I hope you’ll consider this request and give us the opportunity to shine. Love, Silk Sonic.”

Mars’ fanbase, The Hooligans, took the hashtag and ran with it. As they began to trend, .Paak and Mars exchanged heated words, even threatening a breakup with Paak saying, “maybe it’s best we go our separate ways.”

Finally, the Recording Academy stepped in and opened the door to allow Silk Sonic “make their TV debut” at the 2021 GRAMMYs. The “Finesse” artist graciously accepted their invite, promising that they “won’t do the most.”

Other performances include Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and more. The 2021 GRAMMYs will take place this Sunday, March 14 at 8PM ET / 5 PM PT, only on CBS.
