On March 13, just a day after Def Leppard performed at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL, 59-year-old drummer Rick Allen, while standing outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale Beach, was reportedly attacked by an Ohio spring breaker. After appearing from behind a pole, Max Hartley allegedly tackled Allen "at a full run," knocking him back and causing him to hit his head on the ground. Hartley, 19, was arrested and charged with two counts of battery, as well as four counts of criminal mischief, and abusing an elderly or disabled adult. Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 car accident.

Choosing sympathy over indifference, Rick addressed his followers on social media, thanking fans for their "overwhelming support," love, and prayers. He added that his wife, Lauren, was not with him at the time of the attack, and they are now together "recovering in a safe space." Rick's message adds that he and Lauren, "ask you to join us in our effort to move from confusion and shock to compassion and empathy." The statement continues, "We understand this act of violence can be triggering for so many people... Together with love, we can all get through these difficult times." Read the full message below.
